Smoothing Plane 1-1

1-1. First model, first made. This was made very slowly in order to learn as much from the process as I could. There are some aspects that have already been modified (front bun will allow better shaving expulsion, rear tote will nestle over brass boss, machining tolerances will be adjusted away from rocket engine specs…a little…maybe…). The woodwork was a first for me (under expert guidance). The shop now has a proper forge for irons. The quality and style can only get better from here. 1/2” sole with 3/16” sides, 8” long, 2 3/8” wide, 1 15/16” iron. Stainless steel, brass, O1 tool steel iron, maple dyed merlot with spar urethane finish. Those test shavings are mahogany, somewhere under .005” (that’s as thick as the mouth will really give you) and important to note, with an unsharpened iron straight from the forge. More to come…
